April
23, 1913 - Dec. 1, 2001
Bernice Mary Banner, 88, of South
Bend, went to her heavenly home on December 1, 2001, in Dublin, Ohio.
She was born on April 23, 1913, in Michigan City, as the daughter
of Carl Andrew & Eva Whitesel Wilke Suddarath. She traveled
by wagon to South Bend at a young age where she resided most of
her life.
On June 1, 1929, in the Log Cabin
at the University of Notre Dame, she married Frank Theodore
Banner. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his death on August
16, 1985. Bernice was a homemaker, and took great pride in her
cooking and sewing skills. Both Bernice and Frank were charter
members of Christian Center Cathedral of Praise under the
leadership of Rev. Lester Sumrall, where together they were very
active in church ministries. She was a volunteer at the Northeast
Neighborhood Association in South Bend. During the past two
years, Bernice found great peace in her heart and worked to make
others around her laugh and feel at ease. As one of the staff of Friendship
Village said, "Bernice was like a grandmother to all of us.
We will miss her!"
She was preceded in death by her parents,
Eva Suddarath, Carl Wilke; stepfather, Ernest Suddarath; sister,
Katherine Freidline; brother, Theodore Suddarath; and a
granddaughter, Denise Banner.
She is survived by a daughter and
son-in-law, Martha and Donald Anglin of South Bend; a son and
daughter-in-law, Frank E. and Marilyn Banner of Shelby Township,
Michigan; granddaughters, Kathy (Jeff) Towne of South Bend,
Shelly MacIntosh of Royal Oaks, MI, Carol (Harold) Heierman of
North Webster, IN, Shanon Banner (Jason Shell) of Sterling
Heights, MI; grandsons, Donald (Bev) Anglin of Mishawaka, Larry Anglin
of South Bend, Marc Anglin of Columbus, Ohio, Devin (Hope) Banner
of Lancaster, PA, and Darin (Deanna) Banner of Troy, MI. Also
surviving are thirteen great-grandchildren; one
great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Marie Cory of South B end;
and two brothers, Ernest (Virginia) Suddarath of Romance,
AR, and John Suddarath of South Bend.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, December 5, in South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31,
South Bend. Rev. Bonita Laudeman will officiate. Burial will
follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from
2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528
Mishawaka A venue, South Bend, and one hour prior to services
Wednesday in the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has
requested that donations in memory of Bernice may be offered to
Friendship Village of Dublin, 6000 Riverside Drive, Dublin,
OH 43017. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff and
friends at Friendship Village for their excellent care in
Bernice's final days.
