SOUTH BEND - Sister M. St. Mel Banks, CSC, 93, of Saint Mary's Convent, died at 5 a.m. Thursday in her home. Sister M. St. Mel was born Rosalie Bridget Banks on Sept. 4, 1902, in Chicago.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on July 5, 1935; was received as a novice on Jan. 6, 1936; and professed her vows on Feb. 2, 1938. She was assigned to office work and accounting at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Saint Mary's College and was a former postal clerk. She is survived by two nieces, Julie Farley of Hemel, Calif., and Marian Crimmins of Elmwood Park, Ill.
Services will be at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today in the church, where a wake will be at 7 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Bertrand Hall, Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
