Lawrence H. Baldinger

Dr. Lawrence H. Baldinger, associate dean of the University of Notre Dame’s College of Science, a school faculty member for 37 years, died shortly after noon Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital of leukemia. He was 63 years old.

 

Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church on the Notre Dame campus. A wake service will begin at 7 p.m. tonight at Hickey Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

 

Baldinger, who resided at 1234 Hillcrest Rd., also served the university as advisor to pre-medical students, counseling hundreds of pre-medical students who later went on to become practicing physicians.

 

An award named Baldinger’s honor was first presented to a pre-medical senior student by Notre Dame two years ago.

 

Born in Crestline, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1907, Baldinger was awarded pharmaceutical chemist and bachelor of science degrees by Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1928 and 1929, and received his master of science degree from Notre Dame in 1931.

 

Two years later he joined Notre Dame’s department of pharmacy and was made its head in 1933. The pharmacy department was absorbed into the department of chemistry in 1939.

 

In 1941 Baldinger was named assistant dean of the College of Science, acting dean in 1942 and dean in 1943.

 

He served in this capacity until 1960 when he was appointed advisor, while continuing as associate dean and head of the department of pre-professional studies.

In 1950 Baldinger was presented Notre Dame’s lay award for distinguished service to the university.

 

Baldinger’s specialty was organic chemistry and he did extensive research on the oil of peppermint, much of it carried out at Purdue University of the summers of a four-year span to 1941 for the United States Department of Agriculture in cooperation with Purdue’s horticulture department.

 

He was also a member of the academic council at Notre Dame and secretary of the university’s faculty board in control of athletics.

 

He had articles published in various technical journals. He was elected president of the Indian Academy of Science in 1961.

 

His wife Helen, whom he married Aug. 10, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio survives. Also surviving are three sons, Charles D. of South Bend, Lawrence H. Jr., of Jackson, Mich., James E. of Belmont, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Bernardo D’Almeida of Porto, Portugal; 11 grandchildren; a brother Edward Baldinger of Seattle, Wash., and a sister Mrs. Carl Wildenthaler of Cleveland.

 

Following services Tuesday entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and noon until 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

 

Contributions may be made to the Notre Dame Library, Cancer Society of St. Joseph County, or the Hospital Expansion Program.
