SOUTH BEND - Samuel I. Bailin, 78,
died September 17, 2008, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born July
20, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana. After graduating early from
Howe Military Academy, he attended UCLA at the age of 16. He was
the youngest on the football team, and played in a Rose Bowl game
his freshman year. In 1949 Sam married his sweetheart, Lois Gail Hamman.
They had four beloved children together - Debbie Kemmerling,
Randy Sr. (deceased), Mark and Kevin. He was as lucky in business
as he was in love. If your favorite restaurant serves Dreyer's
Ice Cream, you can thank Sam Bailin. If you like to cook those
frozen chicken pieces sold at supermarkets, you can thank Sam
Bailin. And if you enjoy the Big Sam's Sirloin Steaks delivered
by the Schwann Food Co.'s yellow trucks, you can thank...you
guessed it, Sam Bailin. Sam had a major impact on the food
service distribution industry over the past 50-plus years. He
began at his own company, Redi-Froz, Inc. in South Bend, Indiana,
and continued his passion as a world-renowned consultant working
for major food companies. In the year 2000, he was inducted into
the Frozen Food Hall of Fame. While dedicated to the food service
industry, nothing meant more to Sam than his family. In addition
to Lois and his children, Sam is survived by 10 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild - all of whom adored and looked up to him
their entire lives.
The memorial service will be held on Monday,
September 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. in Mountain View Memorial
Gardens, 7900 E. Main St., Mesa, AZ. In lieu of flowers,
donations in his honor may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510
E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014, or to the American Diabetes
Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
