Tennis Earl "Bill" Bailey, 102, of Granger, Ind., and Stuart, Fla., passed away after an extended illness in the Hospice Residence at Stuart.

He was born May 17, 1899, in Ligonier, Ind., to Alson D. and Ottilla (Conrad) Bailey, and was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edgar, Orley, Charles and Delvin.

He married Esther Barthel on July 31, 1927. She died in 1978. He then married Frances Irene Hawkins Coover in 1979, who died in 1989.

Tennis is survived by a brother, James of Osceola, Ind., and a son, Earl (Ingeborg) Bailey of Granger. He has four grandchildren, Susan Bailey of Nashville, Tenn., Karen (Dan) Cottrell of Milford, Mich., Kevin (Laura) Bailey of Granger and Brian Bailey of Richmond, Ind.; and four great-grandchildren, Christina, Daniel and Elizabeth Cottrell and Trace Bailey.

He also has a stepson, Robert (Dorothy) Hawkins of New Buffalo, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Margaret (Arnold) Kapp of New Cumberland, Pa.; several step- grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Bill was employed by the Mobil Oil Company, in the maintenance department for over 30 years, retiring in 1963. Moving to Granger in 1934, he started a fruit and vegetable farm that continues today. He was a member of the Granger Presbyterian Church and had served as deacon, trustee, elder and teacher. While in Stuart he attended the Alliance Church.

Bill enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an avid card player. He belonged to the Pleasant Valley Men's Club and the Clay Township Euchre Club.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Aug. 12, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, with Rev. Dr. Larry Boutell, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Brookings, S.D., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
