Bernard W. Bailey, 78, of North Saint Peter Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Thursday, May 10, in the Cardinal Nursing Home. Bernard was born July 25, 1922, to Charles and Frances (Gillespie) Bailey, who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Bailey.
On Sept. 1, 1959, in Jefferson City, Tenn., Bernard married Charlene M. Warford. Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Charlene. He is also survived by his four sons, Ron (Frances) Bailey of South Bend, Paul Bailey of Largo, Fla., Jerry (Sylvia) Ford of South Bend and Rick (Toni) Ford of South Bend; his daughter, Cheryl Werner of South Bend; his brother, Patrick (Nadine) Bailey of San Antonio, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and by his cousins, Yvonne Shelton and Robert Shelton.
Bernard was a Navy veteran, fireman 1st class, served in the South Pacific during World War II, and retired from White Farm Equipment. Bernard was an active member of the American Legion 284, Moose Lodge 1262, and the V.F.W. 1167.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Disease Association, or to the Cardinal Nursing Home activities department.
