Death Summons Active Citizen
Mrs. Arthur W. Bacon
Passes Away in Memorial Hospital
Mrs. Mabelle Hamilton Bacon, widow of Arthur
W. Bacon who was secretary of the Bissell Chilled Plow works, now long out of
existence, passed away in Memorial hospital at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening. She
had not been in good health for sometime.
Prominent
in the Daughters of the American Revolution she went to Washington D.C., to
attend the organization's national convention several weeks ago, was active in
the work there and later went to Annapolis, Md., to attend the graduation of her
grandson, Ensign Francis W. Bacon, Jr. While there she was taken with a heart
attack, was unable to attend the graduation and returned to South Bend as
quickly as possible, going direct to Memorial hospital on June
8.
Born in
Michigan
Mrs. Bacon was born in Three Rivers, Mich., Dec. 11, 1868, daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Hamilton. After her marriage to Mr. Bacon they
lived in South Bend for some time, later in Mishawaka and then moved to Marion,
O., where he passed away June 29, 1934.
Mrs. Bacon
was active in a number of organizations and in which was recognized as one of
the leaders. She was past president of the Mishawaka Women's club; past
president of the Federated Clubs., of Marion, O.; one of the organizers of Hope
chapel, now the Ridgedale Presbyterian church of South Bend; historian of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, Chautauqua, N.Y.; Indiana vice-president
of the Daughters of 1812 and chairman of the Indiana Blind association. She was
a member of the First Presbyterian church.
Leaves Two
Sons.
Mrs. Bacon leaves two sons, Francis W. Bacon, of Watersmeet, Mich., and
Arthur Bacon, of Grosse Pointe, Mich, and a sister, Mrs. John Rush, 319
West Colfax avenue, with whom Mrs. Bacon has been living for some time. She also
leaves two grandsons, Robert H. Bacon, Niles, Mich., and Ensign Francis H.
Bacon, jr., of Annapolis; three granddaughters, Mrs. John Fletcher of Marion;
Miss Ann Elizabeth Bacon of Grosse Pointe, and Miss Mary Ruth Bacon of
Watersmeet, and one great granddaughter, Cynthia Ruth Fletcher, of
Marion.
Brief
services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the A.M. Russell chapel. Following
the services the body will be taken to Marion, O., for burial beside that of her
husband. Friends may call at the chapel this evening.
