SOUTH BEND - Lorraine L. Backer, born in Michigan City,
Indiana on December 5, 1924, died peacefully at home in
Melbourne, FL on Friday, December 14, 2007. Lorraine's life was
defined by her help and acceptance of others. She was a member of
Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Indialantic, where she
participated in several ministries, including Touched by the
Spirit Small Church Group and Perpetual Adoration. She also did
volunteer work at the Membership Desk of the Brevard County
Senior Center of Melbourne. She loved to travel, read books and
write beautiful letters and cards to her many friends.
She lived in South Bend, IN for 40 years
before relocating to Florida to be near her family. While there,
she was a member of Christ the King Parish, where she served as a
Minister to the Sick and an RCIA sponsor. She will be greatly
missed by all whose lives she touched. She is survived by her
daughter, Celia Phillips (Harold) of Melbourne; one
granddaughter, Lisa Moore (Dan); and two
great-grandchildren, Deegan and Talon. She was preceded in death
by her daughter, Barbara Boller in 1996.
A memorial service is planned for Lorraine
at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community at a later date. A Mass
of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December
21, 2007, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow
in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chesterton, IN. Friends may call from
7 until 9 p.m. on Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N.
Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.
