SOUTH BEND - Mary Rachael Armel, 92, formerly of
Mishawaka, passed away on Friday, February 29, in St. Paul's
Retirement Community. Mary Rachael was born on September 29,
1915, in Center Point, IN, as the daughter of Orville A. and M.
Leora (Mace) Lancet. She was preceded death by her
parents, and by a daughter, Mary Kay, at the age of 5, and a
brother, Dr. Robert Lancet of Carmel, IN.
On August 15, 1948, in Terre Haute, IN, as
the former Mary Rachael Lancet, she married Kenneth Armel, who
preceded her in death on December 2, 2004. Surviving are her son,
Dr. Donald (Cindy) Armel of Statesboro, GA; and a granddaughter,
Dana Allison Armel of Statesboro. After graduating from Indiana
State University Mary Rachael taught at Huntington, IN, North
Manchester, IN, Pittsburgh, PA, and Mishawaka, IN. She retired in
1977 as art coordinator at School City of Mishawaka after
teaching home economics and art at Beiger, Main School and
Mishawaka High School. During World War II, she was an American
Red Cross Recreation Worker at the Norfolk Naval Hospital,
Norfolk, VA, and Valley Forge Army General Hospital at
Phoenixville, PA. She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Mishawaka, a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and
on the Mission Committee. She was also a member of the United
Methodist Women PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, St. Joseph Valley Water
Color Society and Northern Indiana Artists.
Family and friends may visit from 1 to 4
p.m. today (Sunday, March 2) in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th
Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on
Monday, March 3, in the funeral home, with Rev. Ron Bowman of
First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, officiating. Burial
will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial
contributions in Mary Rachael's name may be made to First United
