SOUTH BEND - Ralph M. Applegate, 84, of South Bend, Ind., died at 6:28 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on Sept. 3, 1914, in Blackstone, Ill., to Charles and Etta Jane Applegate, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Leslie and Clifford Applegate.
On July 4, 1937, in the First United Methodist Church, South Bend, he married Mary A. Robinson, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Applegate were married for over 61 years. Mr. Applegate is also survived by three nieces, Barbara Robinson of Mishawaka, Ind., Sue Ann Cieolski of New Carlisle, Ind., and Andrea of California; five nephews, Dr. Dale Applegate of LaPorte, Ind., Ronald Applegate of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Russell Robinson of Mishawaka, David Robinson of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jon Robinson of Granger, Ind.; and by several great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Applegate retired in 1977 from the Homet Corporation in LaPorte where he was an industrial engineer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, South Bend, and the Amateur Radio Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe for fifteen months.
Services for Mr. Applegate will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, at the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend. Dr. Elwood Smith of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the services. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 27, in the funeral home. Entombment will take place in Riverview Mausoleum.
