Anna T. Applegate, 79, of East Ewing Avenue, South Bend, died at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, in Memorial Hospital. She was born on Feb. 16, 1926, in Brooklyn, NY, to Luigi and Antoinette (Votto) De Maio. On Oct. 7, 1950, in Brooklyn, NY, she married John H. Applegate, who preceded her in death on April 21, 1984.
Anna had lived in South Bend since 1958, coming from Brooklyn, NY. During the 1960s Anna was employed as a receptionist with Burkhart Advertising, and then became a claims processor with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where she retired in 1989. She was a member of ABWA (American Business Women's Association), served on the Welcome Wagon and the Lincoln Elementary PTA. Anna loved football and baseball, especially Notre Dame football, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. She also enjoyed reading and attending St. Matthew Cathedral.
Anna is survived by her daughter, Debra Applegate of South Bend, and by her son, Robert J. (Cheryl L.) Applegate of Manhattan, IL. Also surviving are two grandsons, Ryan Applegate of Chicago and Kevin Applegate of Manhattan, IL; two sisters, Sadie De Salvo and Marie Sciattara, both of Brooklyn, NY; and by one brother, Vincent De Maio of Union City, New Jersey. Preceding in death were her sister, Theresa La Greca, and her brother, John De Maio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 S. Miami, South Bend, IN, with Rev. John Cramer officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends will be received in the Palmer Funeral Home -- Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021.
