Arnold D. "Arry" Altman, 88, of South Bend, passed away January 7, 2006, following a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Estes Altman; two sons, Daniel and Jonathan; brother, "Babe" Altman; and grandchildren, Nathan and Elizabeth and Alexa and William.
Arry graduated from Notre Dame in 1941, "Cum Laude", and was a lifetime resident of South Bend. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years in World War II in the Pacific, on the destroyer, USS Chauncey. He continued his relationship with his fellow officers at annual reunions. He was proud to say he continued as an "indefinite reserve in the Navy."
He and his brother, "Nate", had a Studebaker-Packard dealership, which evolved into Avanti Motor Corporation in 1965. They carried on the love of the Avanti from Studebaker against all odds. In 1982, the Avanti Corp. was sold and he bought another business, Rosenstein and Co., with his two sons. In 1987, they also founded Indiana Heat Transfer Corp, in Plymouth, Indiana, with Rick Hite and Warren Edwards. He was a lifetime member of Sinai Synagogue, a member of the Notre Dame Club and Snite Museum. He will be greatly missed and remembered by all who knew him for his love and generosity.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m.
today, Jan. 9 in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435
S. Ironwood Drive at Jefferson. Burial will follow at the Hebrew
Orthodox Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, all
donations be made for cancer research.
