John H. Altice

July 11, 1915 - March 18, 2003

John H. Altice, 87, of South Walnut Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in his residence. Mr. Altice retired from A.M. General in 1980 after 14 years, had previously been employed with the former Studebaker Corporation for 27 years, and two years at the Ford Motor Company in Wayne, Mich. John served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the South Pacific and occupied Japan for six months after the war ended. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the D.F.V. German Club. John was born on July 11, 1915, in Logansport, Ind., to George and Bertha Altice, and moved to South Bend at the age of five. Mr. Altice was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ora Campbell, Earl Campbell, Floyd Campbell, Raymond Campbell and Fay Campbell; and by a half sister, Lela Campbell Newport.

 

On June 12, 1937, in South Bend, he married Margaret L. Winkler, who survives. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Esther Winkler and Mary Scheu, both of South Bend; three nephews, John Scheu, Carl Strebinger and Anthony Winkler; two nieces, Nancy Piechocki and Marilyn Chamberlin; and by 14 great-nieces and nephews.

 

 

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home where a Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Church or to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
