SOUTH BEND, IN - Herbert Jerrold "Bud" Alpern,
81, of South Bend, died June 30, 2008. He was born on March 20,
1927, in Detroit, MI, to Mark and Mabel Alpern. He married Ilene
"Cooky" Fink on March 18, 1951. Mr. Alpern is
survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilene "Cooky" Alpern;
a son, William Mark Alpern of Traverse City, MI; a daughter and
son-in-law, Jane and Craig Powers of Palm Harbor, FL; a
granddaughter, Nancy Lynn Powers; a grandson, Michael Hill
Powers; a sister, Barbara Opperman of Indianapolis, IN; a
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Roberta and Michael Jacobson
of Grand Rapids, MI; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Alice
and Abner Levkoff of Charleston, SC; and many loving
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter,
Nancy Sue Alpern, in 1963. He was a longtime member of Temple
Beth-El in South Bend and the Temple brotherhood, and was a
former member of the South Bend Rotary Club. He was a Navy
veteran of WWII. He was the owner of the former Max Schneider
Company, Inc. He earned his B.A. degree from Washington
University in St. Louis, MO. He enjoyed boating, tennis, golf and
fishing. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and
grandfather. His quick-witted sense of humor, extraordinary
strength of character, generosity and devotion will always be
remembered. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the
Nancy Sue Alpern Memorial Fund at Children's Memorial Hospital in
Chicago, IL; to the food pantry at Temple Beth-El in South Bend;
to the Friends for Faye ALS Research Fund; or to the charity of
one's choice.
Funeral services will be held at Temple
Beth-El in South Bend today, July 2nd, at 2:30 PM, with Rabbi
Eric Siroka officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley
Memorial Park, Granger.
