Stewart Ralph Allen, Jr., 79, of
Greenacre Avenue, South Bend, Ind., died following an extended
illness at 7:03 a.m. on Tues-day, Sept. 29, at St. Joseph's
Medical Center, South Bend. Mr. Allen was born on March 20, 1919,
in Chicago, Ill., to Vivian (Darby) and Stewart Ralph
Allen, Sr., who preceded him in death. He was raised and
graduated from high school in Chicago. He later moved to Oregon
and had been in Niles, Mich., and South Bend since 1950.
He retired in 1985 from Bendix in South Bend
after 30 years of service, and was a member of UAW Local 9. Mr.
Allen was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, South
Bend.
He was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army,
serving under General George Patton in the Fourth Armored
Division. He was a member of Troop C, 89th Cavalry, Recon
Squadron, and fought in The Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy,
the Rhineland and northern France. He was wounded in action and
received a Purple Heart. He was also awarded the American Defense
Service Medal and the European-African-Middle East Service Medal.
Mr. Allen built the house on Greenacre in which they lived, and
he enjoyed auto body repair in his home shop.
On Sept. 8, 1948, in Tigard, Ore., he
married the former Marie Butch of New York City, who
survives.
He is also survived by a son, Stewart R.
(Sandra) Allen, III, of South Bend; two daughters, Sheryl
(Wallace) Lacy of South Bend and Alice Allen of Durham,
N.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer Serban, Jim Serban, Jr.,
Mathew and Luke Ballew, Brandon Allen, and Robert Baranowski,
II, all of South Bend.
Mass of Christian Burial for Stewart R.
Allen, Jr., will be celebrated at 10 a.m. (Ind. time) on Friday,
Oct. 2, at Christ the King Catholic Church, South Bend, with the
Rev. Gary S. Chamberland, C.S.C., associate pastor, officiating.
Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, where full
military rites will be performed by V.F.W. Post 360 of Mishawaka.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
(Mich. time) today at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles, with
a prayer vigil service at 8 p.m. (Mich. time) today by Rev.
Chamberland. Contributions in memory of Mr. Allen may be made to
the TB and Emphysema Association.
