Dorothy Armstrong Allen, 76, a
resident of South Bend, Ind., since 1951, passed away peacefully
at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, in her home, surrounded by her
family. Dorothy, a native of Langhorne, Pa., graduated from
Earlham College in 1945 with a BA in mathematics and piano. While
she raised her five children, Dorothy became active in several
local organizations, including the South Bend YMCA, St. Joseph
County Scholarship Foundation, the South Bend Symphony Women's
Association and the Junior League of South Bend.
In 1963, Dorothy was one of the first women
to receive a master of arts (in mathematics education) from the
University of Notre Dame. In 1968 Dorothy took a position at IUSB
in the mathematics department, which she held until December
2000. From 1982 to 1986 she also taught at St. Mary's College,
Southwestern Michigan and Valparaiso University.
Next to her family, Dorothy's greatest love
was international travel. During her lifetime, she visited nearly
every country in the world. As part of her teaching career with
IUSB, Dorothy lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for two years. She
also traveled to Saudi Arabia in 1979 for the Indiana University
ARAMCO project.
Dorothy's enthusiasm for life extended to
her many hobbies, including music, gardening, bridge, tennis,
bicycling and ballroom dancing. In 1995 Dorothy was inducted into
the Earlham College Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1975, Dorothy was
awarded City Women's Tennis Champion of South Bend. Dorothy was
married to Robert Allen, who survives her, for fifty years.
Others who survive her include a brother,
Bill Armstrong from Westminster, Pa.; a sister, Liz Yocum
from Salem, Ore.; five children, William, Elizabeth, Barbara,
James and Ann; and by 10 grandchildren.
Dorothy's children will hold a memorial
service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the First
Presbyterian Church, 333 West Colfax Avenue, South Bend. In lieu
of flowers, those who wish to make contributions in Dorothy's
memory may send them to the South Bend Symphony Orchestra or to
the Dorothy Allen Memorial Mathematics Scholarship for
International Student Exchange Program, through the IUSB
Mathematical Sciences Department. The address for scholarship
donations: IUSB Development Department, Administration Building,
