SOUTH BEND - Mildred Anna Ailer, 90, of South Bend,
Indiana, passed away at her home following a brief illness with
her family at her side. Mildred was born April 7th, 1918, in
Peoria, Illinois, to Frederick Henry and Anna Estelle (Marshall)
Fautz, who both preceded her in death. In 1948 Mildred
moved to South Bend from Peoria where on February 25th, 1948, she
married C. Herbert Ailer. "Herb," her beloved husband
and soul mate, passed away in 1968. Mildred graduated from Peoria
High School in 1936 and began working as a secretary and
bookkeeper. After moving to South Bend, Mildred continued working
as a bookkeeper at Midwest Electric, F.L. Heckaman and Son, Place
and Company, and eventually retired from Glen Nunemaker
Construction. When Mildred's mother passed away in 1939, Mildred
was charged with raising four younger brothers. Two of her
brothers, William Marshall Fautz of Pasadena, CA, and Howard
Cunningham Fautz of Long Beach, CA, preceded her in death.
Mildred is survived by brothers, Frederick Henry (Norma) Fautz of
Rockford, Illinois, and Jack Theodore Fautz of Carson City,
Nevada. While Mildred had no children of her own she is survived
by a nephew, Thomas H. (Bonnie) Fautz, who was like a son to her.
Mildred also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces
and nephews, along with great-great-nieces and nephews. Mildred
loved to sew and was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed
reading, crossword puzzles and traveling this country and the
world. Mildred was a very caring and loving person who had a
great sense of humor. Mildred was also very proud of her
independence.
In accordance with Mildred's wishes, no visitation or services will be held. She will be buried at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN, after cremation. All arrangements are being handled by the McGann Hay Funeral Home. In Mildred's memory, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Mildred's family would like to give special thanks to Hospice and Senior 1 Care for their help and compassion shown to Mildred in her time of need.
