SOUTH BEND - Mary Marie
Bertha Aftowski, 89, of 23920 Indiana 2, died Saturday
evening in St. Joseph Medical Center. She was a former employee
of Studebaker Corp. and the University of Notre Dame. She was
born Aug. 15, 1896 in Nepatoez, Czechoslovakia, living in South
Bend the past 80 years.
On Sept. 24, 1919 in South Bend as Mary Bednar,
she married Alojzy Aftowski. He died in 1952. She is survived by
four daughters, Evelyn Garbacz, Ginny DeVreese and
Patricia Czarnecki, all of South Bend and Marie Smith of
Riverside, Calif.; a son Jack of South Bend; 17 grandchildren; 25
great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Bednar of South Bend
and Franck Bednar of Cararillo, Calif.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday
in the Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph
Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today in the St. Joseph
Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today.
She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church Rosary
Society and Z. B. Falconettes.
