Thomas Adelsperger, editor, Civil War
veteran and businessman, of 921 West Washington Avenue, died at
St. Joseph's hospital Sunday morning following an illness of
several weeks. He was 71 years old. He lived in South
Bend for the last 22 years. Mr. Adelsperger was born in
Maryland, June 12, 1842 and was the oldest of 12 children. He
moved to Decatur, Indiana, and 1842. Prior to 1861 he was
associate editor and owner of the Decatur, Indiana, Eagle. Upon
the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Adelsperger enlisted in the
89th regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry and through faithful
service was prompter to adjutant of the regiment before the Civil
War closed. The next step of Mr. Adelsperger eventful
career was entering into business at Decatur and later at Lefort.
In 1871 he became a traveling salesman for a wholesale drug
house. He was associated with Peter Van Schaack & Sons,
of Chicago, at the time of his death. He came to South Bend
in 1880.
Mr. Adelsperger married Helen Frances Hill
in 1866, who with the following children survived him:
Rolland Adelsperger and Miss E. the C.
Adelsperger, of this city, and Mrs. George Yenn, of Chicago.
There are five surviving brothers and sisters, Rev. John
Adelsperger, Carlisle, Kentucky; George Adelsperger, San
Francisco; Sister M. Waltrude, superior of sage roses Academy, La
Porte, Indiana; Mrs. Jane Houck, Fort Wayne; and Mrs. Ellen
Durbin, Peru, Indiana, and two half-brothers, Charles
Adelsperger, Sacramento, California, and Bernard Adelsperger, St.
Louis, Missouri.
The funeral services will be held at 9
o'clock tomorrow morning from St. Patrick's Church, Rev. John F.
DeGroote, officiating. Burial will be private, will be in
Cedar Grove Cemetery. The following will act as
pallbearers, Dr. J. H. Berteling, Patrick O'Brien, James Mallon,
David L. Guilfolyle, John B. Weber and William P. Furey.

Funeral services for Thomas Adelsperger, of
921 West Washington Avenue were held from St. Patrick's Church
this morning, Rev. John F. DeGroote, officiating. Interment
was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
