From the 1885 History of Steuben County, Indiana page 709:
Thomas W. Haines, farmer, Section 32, Jackson Township, is one of the most
enterprising citizens of Steuben County. He is a son of William Haines
and came with him to this county in October, 1853. He was born in Carroll
County, Ohio, in 1840, and there received his education, his time after coming
to Indiana being required on the farm helping to clear the land of trees
and stumps and prepare it for cultivation. He remained with his parents
till the breaking out of the Rebellion, and in 1861 enlisted in the 23rd
Indiana Light Artillary and served 3 years and 9 months. He was married
after his return home to Nancy Ryan, a native of the state of New York.
They have a family of three children -- Adelbert, Addie and Robert.
