I
am attempting to aid an 85 yr. "youngster" (I
am 83) in learning more about his LUCAS/TAYLOR family of
Steuben Co.,
Indiana. In particular needs proof that his Henry
was a son of
JEROME TAYLOR. This family intermarried with
the LUCAS',
and all of whom, early-on, lived around Marietta,
Washington Co.,
OH (when still the Northwest Territory), and some of whom
later went to
Delaware Co., OH, prior to coming to Steuben Co., IN.
May have
spent a brief time in Kinderhook, Branch Co., Michigan,
also.
Having researched the LUCAS' for almost a half
century, and
having accumulated a great deal of data on them,
perhaps I might
be able to help someone interested in this family, too.
Incidentally, one ISRAEL LUCAS ...bur. in
Jamestown Cem.,
Steuben Co., IN... is said to have been the first
child born in
the stockade (Campus Martius) at the Northwest Territory
opening site,
Marietta, Washington Co.,OH, and believe that inscription
can be found
on his monument, too.
Looking forward
too sharing and comparing information.
I am in
possession of a receipt book that shows John Cary & Son
paid
certain businesses and individuals in Salem Center, (sometimes
just
Salem) Indiana

be John
Wallace Cary and his only surviving son George W Cary.
Can anyone
verify this information? If so,
I would like to know John W Cary's
lineage.

(Jackson)
Baxter. Her
husband's name was Bryan Anthony Baxter, Children Phyllis,
Mildred and Charles Ross Baxter. I do not know her

"Indian" Harley in town. He also worked for the New
York Central
Railroad.
They also owned a gas station (standard oil) in Hamilton.
Any info you

I am interested in finding anyone who might have
information on
the families that emigrated to Kansas in the 1870's.
Why?
Who encouraged them to move? How they found life there
for the
few years they were there before returning to Steuben Co.,
IN.
Some of the families known to have done this were:
Jacob
& Elizabeth Menges Wolf [their daughter Mary Alice was
born in KS
in 1874]; Andrew & Percy Slocum Wolf [their daughter Mary
B. was
born in KS in 1872]; Joseph & Jane Anderson Wolf [ 2
children,
Martha C. 1872 & Harvey L. 1874 born in KS].
I believe there were more families who moved to Milford,
Davis
Co., KS at that time, but do not have them in mind
today. Oral
history from our family indicates that the Jacob Wolf family
lived in
an abode that had been build by previous 'homesteaders' that
was a sod
hut. They were thre from about 1872-1877 or so during
which time
there was a major drought, locusts, prairie fires, and other
natural
disasters which discouraged them to the point that they
returned to
Steuben Co. The families traveled to KS by wagon but
returned the
women and children by train from Independence, MO, while the
men drove
the livestock back to IN which took them about 6 weeks more in
time.
Thank you for any information that you might have regarding
this
emigration to KS and back.
