WILLIAM LEROY STAYNER from Steuben Republican, Nov. 29, 1922, pg 1, col 5 WILLIAM LEROY STAYNER (picture included in obit) William Leroy, the oldest son of Milton and Eliza Jane Stayner, was born July 6th, 1848, in an old log cabin on his grandfather's farm, which was the first farm to be settled in Steuben county, located on the north side of Jackson Prairie. When he was 18 months of age his parents moved to a farm of their own, a mile east of Jackson Prairie, which was his home until he was married. As a boy, William attended the district school near by. On July 4, 1875, he was united in marriage with Jane Matilda Castell. To this union were born six children, one dying in infancy and one son, John, preceeding him in death only five weeks. Those remaining are, Roy, Willam and Zora, living in Jackson township, and Tillie, now Mrs. Robert Evans, of Litchfield, Mich.; also six grandchildren, Ora, Leon, Hazel and Bobbie Stayner and Elizabeth and Alfred Evans, and a brother, Adelbert Stayner, the sole surviving member of the family of Milton Stayner. At the time of their marriage, the happy couple moved to a farm west of Otter Lake which William had purchased a few months previous. After about 15 years, they moved to the Crockett farm a mile west of Angola, in order that Mrs. Stayner might be near her invalid parents. After about six years, they purchased the old homestead which has been his residence until his death, which occurred Nov. 21st, 1922, aged 74 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Ever since the death of his wife which occurred eight years ago, he has been in failing health. He was an industrious man and met with courage and fortitude all the hardships of pioneer life and endured with patience the intense suffering of his illness. The family and community mourn the loss of an affectionate father and loyal neighbor. CARD OF THANKS We desire to express our gratitude to those who so kindly ministered to us and remembered us during the illness and death of our beloved father. Roy Stayner Wm.
