JAMES OLIVER STAYNER from Steuben Republican, January 18, 1939, pg 10, col. 6 James Oliver Stayner, son of William Perry and Jane Powers Stayner, was born in Steuben county, Indiana, on October 29. 1862, and passed away January 9, 1939, at his home in Orland, aged 76 years, 2 months and 11 days. On February 6, 1886, he was united in marriage with Nellie Davis at her home near Flint. They began housekeeping at Jackson Prairie and lived there until April of 1903, when they moved to Orland where they have lived till called away. His companion of more than 52 years passed away less than a year ago, on April 15. To this union were born 10 children. Of these there remain four: Mrs. Lucile Hedglin, Hudson; Mrs. Laura Blanning, Cambridge, Mass; Winn Stayner, Raleigh, N. D.; and Frank Stayner, Deer Lodge, Mont. They also raised Bliss Stayner (Jr), a grandson. He also leaves 37 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Lydia Purdy, of Jackson Prairie, and a host of friends. He served the community as village blacksmith many years. He was considered a good mechanic in both wood and iron. He was spoken of as the farmer's friend. A very large circle of friends and relatives attended the funeral services which were held in the Methodist church in Orland, the business activities of the town being suspended during the services. Rev. J. H. Brown, church pastor, and Rev. Howard E. Warner, pastor of the Congregational church officiated, and the interment was made beside the body of his wife in the Jackson Prairie cemetery. Relatives of the deceased were pall bearers. Among those from a distance who attended the services were the son, Winn Stayner, of Raleigh, N. Dak.; the daughter, Mrs. Lucile Hedglin and family, of Hudson, Ind.; Mrs. Dorris Hanson, of Detroit; Dr. and Mrs. Leo Purdy, of Sturgis, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Powers and Mrs. Frank Miller, of Montpelier, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sines of York; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Call, of Avilla; Mrs. Byron VanWagner and two sons, of Battle creek, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Shank; Mr. and Mrs. Ray shank; Mr. and Mrs. George Goodrich and Orville Stevens, of Angola; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dando, of Honey Lake, Mich. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION; James Oliver Stayner was the son of William Perry Stayner (11 Feb 1829-08 Jan 1915). His mother was Dolly Jane (Powers) Stayner (02 Apr 1833-15 Jan 1925.
