STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1899, page 1, column 7 MELVIN EMERSON SCOTT, 19 Jul 1841 - 07 Apr 1899 Mr. Scott was born in Coventry, Chenango county, N. Y., July 19, 1841, and died at his home in Millgrove township, Steuben county, Indiana, April 7, 1899, aged 57 years, 8 months and 18 days. His father died while he was yet in his teens, and after a few years of successful business in the east, in company with his brother Samuel he came to Indiana. The two brothers purchased the William Dixon farm, south of Orland. In time the property was divided, and in a business transaction Mr. Scott obtained the farm he owned at the time of his death. His mother lived with him a number of years and died at his home. Mr. Scott was a loving and dutiful son, a kind and affectionate brother, an honest and conscientious man in all his dealings, and in spite of his long years of suffering and affliction, he maintained a kind and pleasant attitude toward those about him. He leaves this side of the mystic river three sisters and one brother, who with many friends will greatly miss him. He was reconciled to the thought of death, and quietly passed through its open gateway into the beautiful beyond.
