STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1900, page 4, column 1 EDWIN POWERS, 17 Feb 1831 - 01 Dec 1900 Edwin Powers was born in Alleghany county, New York, Feb. 17, 1831, and died in Angola, Ind., Dec. 1, 1900, aged 69 years, 9 months and 14 days. His parents were Winn and Betsey Powers who came to York and located in what is known as Powers settlement in 1837, when Edwin was seven years of age. He was one of the remaining pioneers of the county, and was known as an honest, industrious man who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. When a boy he attended school at the old log school house in the Powers settlement, becoming proficient in the branches taught, and later was a great reader and was well informed on all public affairs. At the age of 17 his father gave him his time, and with the aid of his uncle, Clark Powers, and his father, he selected a farm in Ohio, three miles east of his father's home, which by hard labor he cleared and improved, and after his marriage to Philena Carter he commenced keeping house on his farm. After the death of his wife, Philena, he was married to Clarissa Jones, and after her death was married to Ann Malcolm, who survives him. He also leaves six children. He lived on the farm continuously until about ten years ago when he moved to Angola. Last Friday morning he was stricken with paralysis and soon became unconscious, and died Saturday evening at nine o'clock surrounded by his wife and children. The funeral services were held at the Powers church in York township, Dec. (3rd or 4th), Elder C. S. Medbury officiating.
