STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1903, page 1, column 5 WILLIAM SHERARD JOYCE JR., 08 Feb 1830 - 07 Oct 1903 Wm. Sherard Joyce, Jr., was born in Lewesburg, Union county, Pa., Feb. 8, 1830. Died at his home in Orland, Ind., Oct. 7, 1903, aged 73 years, 7 months and 29 days. The deceased was the son of William and Isabelle Joyce, whose maiden name was Isabelle Sherard. The parents and children then living, three daughters and one son, Isabelle, Mary, Eliza and William, moved to Franklin township, DeKalb county, Ind., in the fall of 1841, but moved from there to Orland in the spring of 1847, where they lived until called away one by one from time into eternity. Isabelle was the first to be called away in 1850, when but a girl. The father was taken in 1851, when William was only 20 years of age, leaving the responsibility of the home to the mother and her only son. Three years later in 1854 the mother succumbed to the grim messenger, which left the three children alone. About this time William met with an accident which resulted in leaving him blind. Mary, the elder sister, married and lived on the old homestead and William and his maiden sister moved to Orland. Mrs. McKinley was taken away in the year 1897, after years of severe suffering. Eliza, the maiden sister, died at the home of the brother and in Orland in 1902, leaving William, shut out from the light of day, to mourn his loss, until the death angel called him away to rest. As a citizen, Orland loses one of its greatest benefactors and philanthropists, as a living testimony he left a public library of over 2,000 volumes, with suitable library room and means for its maintenance. He was valued for his good judgement and sought out for council and advice. As a neighbor, he was ever ready to relieve the worthy when in distress. As a friend, one in time of need, truthful, abhoring injustice wherever seen. The deceased leaves a number of cousins and mumberless friends to mourn their loss. The funeral was held in the Congregational church at Orland, Ind., Saturday, Oct. 10, 1903, conducted by Rev. C. W. Long, assisted by Rev. E. H. Peters. Interment in the Green Lawn cemetery.
