STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 1901, page 1, column 5 ELIZA C. (RATHBUN) HUNTER, 02 Feb 1827 - 26 May 1901 Mrs. Eliza C. Hunter was born Feb. 2nd, 1827, married to John A. Hunter, Sept. 12, 1847, and died May 26, 1901. She came to Orland in 1863 and has since made her home in this vicinity. She left her home Friday morning to visit her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Cleveland, four miles east. Not feeling as well the next morning, kept her bed, but visited with neighbors during the day, and not until late Saturday evening did they think her seriously ill. They summoned medical aid about midnight, but all efforts to restore her were fruitless, and she passed away before the morning came. Her work had been well done, a devoted wife, and indulgent mother and a constant friend. The husband she leaves will mourn because his home is empty; the children, of which there were three, will mourn because their counselor and guide is no more; her friends will mourn because her friendship was as lasting and abiding as life itself. Though, by nature of a retiring disposition, yet her home influence has, at all times, been keenly felt. She leaves a legacy to her children that kings might covet; the influence of a pure well spent life; a home that is a model of beauty, a much better monument than any made of granite. Funeral, Tuesday, May 28, 1901, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Parker. Rev. Ratzell preached a very appropriate sermon. She was then laid away in Green Lawn cemetery and we seem to hear her saying, "Here, safely in heaven, I'm waiting for you." ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Eliza C.
