STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1898, page 1, column 6 MOSES B. HERSHEY, 01 Jan 1843 - 28 Aug 1898 Moses B. Hershey was born in Ontario county, New York, January 1st, 1843, and died at Hillsdale, Michigan, August 28th, 1898. He came to Steuben county when quite young with his father, George B. Hershey. In August 1861, he enlisted in Co. A. 29th Ind. Vol., and was mustered into the U. S. service at Laporte, Ind., August 27, 1861. He served with the company until his capture, participating in the battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Liberty Gap and Chickamauga. He was captured near the close of the battle of Chicamauga in Sept., 1863, was held a prisoner over eighteen months, most of the time being in Andersonville. After his release he was on the ill-fated steamer "Sultana" which was blown up loaded with returning prisoners of war in March, 1865, and some 1500 lost their lives. Moses was fortunate in being able to get away from the wreck, and after swimming down the river about five miles was rescued. He returned to Fremont, Ind., where, in 1867, he married Miss Ellen Shephard. To this union were born two daughters, who, with their mother, survive him. Shortly after his marriage he removed to Hillsdale where he has since resided. Aside from his wife and children he leaves a mother, two brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss. Moses B. Hershey was one of the best soldiers that served his country in the war of the rebellion. His universal good nature won and retained for him scores of friends. As a citizen he was well thought of. He was a member of the order of Odd Fellows, under whose care he was laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery at Hillsdale. While he was mortal and like active mortals had his faults, yet with a heart full of sympathy for all, and a hand ever outstretched in charity to aid suffering humanity, it can be truthfully said of him that he lived a consistent, manly life; and while we drop a tear over his departure, we feel that our loss is his gain, and that he was fully prepared to accept the invitation, "come up higher." His going adds another to answer "here" at the roll call on high, and reminds his waiting comrades that their final muster out is near at hand; that we may all have our "final statements and descriptive lists" as ready to meet the order for final muster but as did Comrade Hershey, is our prayer.
