MARTHA C. (SPOONER) HELME, 04 Nov 1844 - 24 May 1898

   Mattie C. Spooner was born in Liverpool, Medina county, Ohio, 
Nov. 4th, 1844, and died in Orland, Ind., May 24, 1898.  Funeral at 
the home; sermon by Rev. Weaver.  She was married to J. W. Helme, 
June 11, 1865, and soon after came with her husband to Orland where 
she has resided continuously, with the exception of about three 
years spent in Michigan.  In the fall of 1887, under the ministry 
of A. L. Lamport, she united with the M. E. church at Orland, of 
which she remained an honored and faithful member until the time of 
her death.  She had been for many years a sufferer, but had 
struggled with fortitude and patience against the fell enemy 
disease, with a tenacity seldom witnessed.  All that medical skill 
and gentle ministering hands could do was done, but all to no 
avail.  She leaves a husband and one son to mourn her loss; also a 
brother who resides at York, O., and many other more distant 
relatives.  Her many virtues, modest and unobtrusive manners, her 
intelligence and her womanly worth, bound her in the esteem of her 
neighbors and friends with more than ordinary respect.  Lovely in  
life, we gazed upon her pale face, still beautiful in death, until 
the casket was closed and she flitted out of our lives. But were 
our eyes not "holden" we would have seen as her sainted spirit 
passed through the pearly gate, her hand beckoning to those she 
loved so much, to meet her on the other shore.

   Martha/Mattie C. (Spooner) Helme, 04 Nov 1844/1845 - 24 May 
1898, married John Wesley Helme, 24 Sep 1843 - 20 Sep 1907.  They 
are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, Indiana. 
Martha was the daughter of Sylvester M. Spooner and Julia L. 
(Wilmont) Spooner.  John Wesley Helme was the son of W. C. Helme 
and Elizabeth Helme.
   Child of John and Martha's marriage, William Albert Helme, 27 
Jun 1873 - 1942, married Chloe Gertrude (Kelham) Spooner, 1880 - 
1946.  They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Stuben 
County, Indiana.
   On 27 May 1899, John Wesley Helme married his 2nd wife, Alice E. 
(Wiles) Hobson Helme, 1855 - 1921.  She is buried at Circle Hill 
Cemetery near her daughter, Meda Hobson Ruth.
   Martha's mother-in-law, Elizabeth Helme Main, 19 Dec 1819 - 31 
Jul 1874, married Jared Main after her 1st husband died.  Elizabeth 
is buried at Memorial Grove Cemetery.  William A. (Al) Helme, 12 
Aug 1837 - 06 Mar 1877, is buried next to his mother, Elizabeth 
(_____) Helme Main so he is a brother of John Wesley Helme.  
Another possible brother is Almanza Helme, 1839 - 1900, who married 
Ellen (Fuller) Helme, 1847 - 1920.  They are buried at Greenlawn 
Cemetery.

There are no Spooners listed in the "Cemeteries of Steuben County, 
1990."
