Mary Jane Altenburg Hanes
In the Hamilton News, March 22, 1918
it says, "MARY JANE ALTENBURG Mary Jane Altenburg was born in Geneseo
county, NY and died March 14th 1918, aged 82 years, 1 month, 8 days.
She was the oldest daughter of Daniel and Sarah Altenburg, pioneer settlers
of DeKalb County who settled near Auburn in 1838, coming there by ox team.
She was married Sept. 27th, 1857, to Charles Hanes who died Dec. 5, 1894.
To this union were born six children - Ella, Harriett, Moses, Josephine,
Charles, and Fred - of which to precede her were, Ella, Josephine, and Fred.
She leaves behind her, 3 brothers, Cosper, William, and Frank Altenburg,
and her dearly beloved sister, Harriett Hanes, widow of George William Hanes;
and three children, Hattie E. Aldrich, Moses B., and Charles B. Hanes.
Mary Jane Hanes was a devout Christian all her lifetime, being identified
with the church her whole life since early childhood, and her greatest pleasure
was to be in God's house with her family. In all her sickness and suffering,
there was never a complaint, except of the trouble she made to someone else
perhaps. She was prepared and ready and waiting, so death had no sting
here. One of the last conscious acts was to gather the family round
her bedside for prayer, and with her own lips make the prayer, praying all
for them. Funeral services were held from the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Hattie Aldrich, where she died, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 16, conducted
by Rev. B. F. Hornaday. Interment in the Butler Cemetery."
