STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1904, page 1, column 5 CHARLES GRIFFIN, 12 Jan 1834 - 25 Jan 1904 Charles Griffin was born in Cameron, Steuben county, New York, Jan 12, 1834, and died at his home west of Angola, Jan. 25, 1904, aged 70 years and 13 days. In early life, his parents moved to Erie county, Pennsylvania, and from thence to Licking county, Ohio, in 1836, and in 1848, they came to DeKalb county, Indiana, settling on what is now known as the old Griffin homestead, south of Auburn. Here Charles grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Miss Jane McBride on the 9th day of June, 1861. There were given to this union five children, namely, Emma J., Joan N., Eli B., Ida E. and Byron W., all of whom are living except Emma J., who a few years ago passed to the future state. Mr. Griffin professed faith in the World's Redeemer and united with the U. B. Church in 1860, in which he lived a devoted christian until the end came. He became a resident of Steuben county in the year 1867, where by industry and economy he made for himself and family a fine home. Few men, if any, in DeKalb or Steuben counties, have done more hard work or been more successful financially, and yet labored at so great a disadvantage as he has. Having lost an arm when young, he seemed to realize his condition and met every difficulty with a herculean effort and overcame. He did almost all kinds of farm work such as plowing, ditching, husking corn and he cut his own grain with the primitive grain cradle. He was a good chopper, and the writer remembers of his cutting an entire set of logs for a cabin, and driving the clapboards for the roofing and also of being at the raising of a double log barn, where he carried up one corner of the building. Mr. Griffin leaves to mourn, a faithful and devoted wife, four children, three brothers and a community of neighbors who say that he was a good citizen.
