STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1905, p.1, c.5 CHARLES W. GOODALE, M.D., 11 May 1844 - 05 Jan 1905 Dr. Charles W. Goodale, Son of Burdett B. and Mary Ann Goodale, was born on a farm five miles north of Metz, Indiana, in York township, May 11, 1844, and in early life moved to a farm just west of Metz. His father died when he was but a small boy, leaving the mother with four children. He had the advantages of the district school, attended high school at Angola, and spent some time in Hillsdale college. At the opening of the Civil war the older brother, Albert, enlisted, and a few months later a letter came bearing the sad word that he had been wounded, and later a second message was conveyed to the mother that her son was dead. In 1864, the subject of this sketch enlisted in the 30th Michigan infantry and served to the close of the war. On his return home he began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. H. D. Wood, and entering Rush Medical College, Chicago, graduated in 1869, and later took a post graduate course. Since that time he has followed his profession almost continuously, having practiced at St. Joe, Ind., Reed City, Mich., Orland, a short time, and Metz, the home of his boyhood, where most of his work was accomplished. Deceased was joined in marriage with Margaret A. Parrott, Sept. 5th, 1869, and to this union were born four sons and two daughters, one son dying a few years ago. Of his immediate family there are left to cherish his memory, the wife, five children, his aged mother and a brother and sister. Deceased accepted Christ as his savior in the winter of 1870, and was baptized by elder John Aylsworth. His church affiliations have been commendable at all times since he became a Chistian, and he has had a prominent part in the interest of the Lord's work. As a physician he was successful to a great degree, and while he was able to relieve thousands of the aches and pains incident to life, and had worn himself out in this service, yet when bodily ailments came upon him there seemed to be no one who could give relief, so in the midst of a people whom he had known and for whom he had ministered for a generation, and who will remember him as a good man who had always their best interests at heart, he passed to his rest in the full hope of the gospel, Jan. 5, 1905, aged 60 years, 7 months and 24 days.
