STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1897, page 4, column 4 Mary Headley Merritt Gilbert DIED in York township, June 14, 1897, Mrs. Mary Gilbert, aged 67 years, 2 months and 15 days. Deceased was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, and moved to Indiana with her parents in 1850 and was married to Daniel Merritt in 1851. Thomas, Levi and Erford, who survive her, were the fruits of this marriage. In 1862 her husband was removed from her by death. Leaving her alone with her three small children on the farm now owned by William Kent. In the year 1864 she was united in marriage to Charles Gilbert. Three children, Lida, Sina and Frank are the fruit of this marriage. In 1883 she was again left a widow, her second husband dying in May of that year. By reason of her coming to this county at an early day she suffered the trials and privations of pioneer life. Her friends and neighbors will honor and cherish her memory. In all times of trial she could be relied upon as a true friend. Her children's welfare was ever uppermost in her mind, and by her careful guidance they have grown to be useful men and women. She accepted Christ in her youth and has since lived a consistent life. She has fought a good fight, has kept the faith, has finished her work and has now entered into the joy of her Lord. Funeral services were held at the Powers Church, June 16, Rev. G. W. Long, of Williams county, officiating. Married, 2nd, Charles M. Gilbert, died 25 May 1883 (listed as 1882 in the cemetery book, aged 42 years, 7 months and 20 days. Erford E. Merritt, 16 Jul 1857 - 01 Feb 1904.
