DELLER GILBERT
"Iva Deller Gilbert was born on August 4, 1876 on Cream Ridge Farm
four
miles west of Pleasant Lake. Her parents were John Albert and Lucy
Deller.
Her girlhood was spent on the farm being a part of a busy household of six
children. As a young girl she and her family attended the Mt. Zion church
and
throughout her life enjoyed an active interest in this church. She attended
the county school near Mt. Zion and in later years roomed in Pleasant Lake
in
order to graduate from high school there. She received teachers training
at
Tri-State college in Angola and taught for several years in the Windfall
school east of Pleasant Lake.
On October 18, 1899 she and Frank G. Gilbert of Pleasant Lake were
married
at the Deller farm home and for fifty-five years they lived in the Gilbert
home on the west band of the lake, where they celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary in 1949, with many friends and relatives dropping in to extend
good wishes.
Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed working in the Baptist church of which her husband
was
a member although she retained her membership in the Mt. Zion church.
In 1927 and 1928 Mr. and Mrs Gilbert lived in Indianapolis where Mr.
Gilbert was a speaker of the House of Representatives for two terms and they
enjoyed the activities made possible by that office. In later years
they
spent winters in Florida and much time with their daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Smith of Evanston Illinois. Her sister-in-law,
Mrs.
Grace Jackson, spent the past summer with her in the Gilbert home.
On April 11, 1954, Mr. Gilbert passed away and not quite a year later
on
April 6, 1955, Mrs. Gilbert, after a serious illness of three weeks in the
Evanston hospital, passed away.
Mrs. Gilbert will be well remembered for her keen interest in family
and
friends, her alert and active mind and her true devotion to her religion
and
her church affiliations.
Mrs. Gilbert was the second of a family of six children, Harvey J.
Deller,
deceased, Worthy A. Deller, deceased, Artie R. Fast, lawyer, living in
Spokane, Washington and Letta Sugenia Couch, living in New Haven, Connecticut.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Harold A. Smith, of Evanston,
Illinois and a grand daughter, Elizabeth Smith Bexler of Bloomington, Indiana
and nine nieces and nephews.
