Steuben-Republican 23 April 1884 P. 5 On Sunday morning, April 13, the people of this vicinity were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Emily Gilbert, wife of Joseph Gilbert of Otsego Township. The deceased was born in Orleans County, New York on January 14, 1835. Her parents moved to this county in 1837 and she has been a resident here since that time. In 1861, February 17, she was married to Joseph Gilbert. She left her home on Saturday morning to go to Hamilton, apparently in the best of health and seemed to be so until just before starting home. After getting into the buggy she was taken with a fainting spell from which she never revived, dying in one hour and 20 minutes. Her maiden name was Case. She leaves a husband and 3 children and a great number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The death was so sudden that it is almost impossible to realize or believe that she is dead. Only a few days ago she was apparently in the best of health, but now she has gone and one more home is left without a mother's guiding hand and watchful eye. Such a loss, none but those who have been called upon to lose their mother can realize. The funeral services were held at the North Brick Church in Otsego Township, Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Stewart officiating. Strange as it may seem, she had said a great many times that she had expected to die in that way. For the untiring aid and care of the many friends at Hamilton and to the neighbors at home, the family wish to extend their sincere and grateful thanks. Sent in by J. A. Childers
