DAVID S. GILBERT

In Pleasant Lake, Indiana, April 19, 1891, Mr. David S.
Gilbert, aged 63 years, 9 months and 4 days.

David S. Gilbert was born in Lorain County, Ohio, July
15, 1827, and removed with his parents to Indiana in 1843. In
1852 he joined a company and went to California. He returned
in 1856, and in November of that year was married to Miss Lucy
Gaylord, who died February 19, 1864, leaving him with four
motherless children, the youngest of whom died shortly after.
In October, 1866, he married Miss Permelia Grant, who survives
him. He leaves five children, three of whom are by the former
marriage, seven grandchildren and many relatives and friends
to mourn his death. Mr. Gilbert was a man of more than
ordinary ability and in some directions manifested marked
talent. He always inspired confidence and gained the respect
of his fellow townsmen, as an evidence of which they
frequently placed him in positions of trust. Although never
making a public profession of religion, he frequently attended
services and was always an attentive listener, and took more
than a casual interest in the affairs of the church. All knew
him as a good neighbor, a kind father and a loving husband.
