STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1877, p. 3, c. 1 SOPHRONIA (ALLEN) EMERSON, 25 Feb 1799 - 17 Mar 1877 The many citizens of this county who were acquainted with the family, will be pained to learn the death of Mrs. Sophronia Emerson, relict of the well known Judge Avery Emerson, formerly of this village. Widow Emerson died at Kendallville on the 17th of this month, at the age of 78 years. She was born in Massachusetts in February, 1799. During her maidenhood she removed to Balston, N.Y., where in 1819 she was married to Mr. Emerson. Shortly after, they moved to Richland county, Ohio, and labored hard in clearing a fine farm. In 1836 the family moved into this State, settling in Salem township, in this county, where their large family of children grew to man and womanhood. In 1858 the Judge and such of his family as had not now gone into business for themselves, moved to Angola where he remained until 1864, when they removed to Kendallville, where in the fall of that year, Judge Emerson died. His widow continued to reside there until her death on the 17th inst. (Parsell) Emerson, 24 Jul 1833 - 11 Apr 1915, daughter of Moses Parsell, 12 Feb 1797 - 14 Nov 1839, and his 2nd wife, Hannah B. (Crilley) Parsell, 11 Oct 1797 - 08 Aug 1846. Avery Jr. and Elizabeth are buried at Block Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Moses and Hannah Parsell are buried at Flint Cemetery, Steuben Oounty, Indiana. Avery Jr. and his family are in the 1880 United States Census for Salem, Steuben County, Indiana, Family History Library Film #1254312, NA film #T9-0312, page #281C. Emily (Emerson) Parsell, 10 Dec 1828 - 04 Jun 1896, married Aaron G. Parsell, M.D., 21 Jan 1826 - 17 Mar 1904. Aaron was also the son of Moses Parsell and his 2nd wife, Hannah. Emily and Aaron are buried at O-HUD Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Sophronia Emerson, age 43 on the 1880 U. S. Census, is listed as a sister living in her brother John's home.
