Grove J. Duke, son of Wright and Ann Duke, was born
in Millgrove Township May 10, 1850. Three sisters and one half
brother completed the family circle of which a sister, Mrs. Julia
Hanselman is the
only one now living. During his boyhood, his parents moved to
Columbia,
Ohio, where they lived until he was 10 years old, when they returned to
Millgrove. On Feb. 10, 1878 he was united in marriage to Emma
Moore
of Greenfield Mills, and for 43 years they were permitted to live their
lives together in Orland and vicinity. Besides the wife and
sister,
there are left to mourn a son, Claude, two daughters, Mrs. Maude Munch
of
Orland, and Mrs. Grace Knecht of Montpelier, Ohio, 15 grandchildren and
many friends and neighbors. Mr. & Mrs. Duke united with the
Methodist
Church some 28 years ago. He also was a member of the I.O.O.F.
Order
until recently. He was a great lover of children and his
beautiful
lawn was a favorite playground not only for his grandchildren, but for
all
the children in the neighborhood. He was self reliant and
reserved,
but beneath the reserve, friends and neighbors found a kindly spirit
manifesting
itself in generous service. He was an industrious man, and
although
his health had been failing for several years, he never entirely gave
up
his work as a farmer and mechanic. Less than a week ago he was
about
his daily tasks when the message came that his work was done, and after
a few days of painless rest, he fell asleep knowing that his loved ones
were all with him. Services were held at the home, Thursday,
Sept.
22 at 2:00 pm. He was laid to rest at the Green Lawn Cemetery.
