                       SAMUEL J. ALLEN
"Samuel Justice Allen, the first born child of Artemus and Elvira Garrison
Allen, was born in Salem township, Steuben county, Ind., Feb. 20, 1876, and
departed this life at his home in Salem township, Nov. 23, 1934, at the age of
58 years, 9 months and 3 days.
Mr. Allen spent his entire life in the neighborhood in which he was born.
On March 8, 1904, he was united in marriage to Jennie E. Clink.  One son,
Wendell, was born to this union.  The home was soon saddened by the death of
Mrs. Allen.  He was married again, to Josie Deller, on July 20, 1906.  This
home was blessed with three daughters, Gardus Elnore, Margaret Eloisse and Francis
Elvira.
Mr. Allen was a man of character industrious, honest, patient and kind.  He
was true in his convictions, but at the same time, he was tolerant toward the
sincere views of those who differed with him.  He was a loving and devoted
husband and father and a true neighbor.  He lent his support to all forces for
the betterment of the community in which he lived.  Early in life he united
with the Trinity chruch and later transferred his membership to the Salem Center
Presbyterian church.  To this institution he was always loyal, giving of his
best to her.  The churches to which he belonged recognized his faithful
services and his worth by electing him to the office of an elder.  The church to which
he belonged suffers a great loss in his departure.
The departed leaves to mourn their loss his widow, the son, Wendell, of
Hudson; three daughters, Mrs. Walter Hanna, and Mrs. Robert Greenman, of Salem
township, Mrs. John Michael, of Eaton, O. three brothers, Isaac Clyde, Floyd
Wayne, of Salem township, and Everett Loyd, of Toledo, O. also four sisters,
Mrs. George Fatscher, of Ossian, Ind., Mrs. William Noll, of South Bend, Mrs.
Earl Wolfe, of Pleasant Lake, and five grandchildren.  Besides these, many
friends will miss his genial presence.
Funeral services were held in the Salem Center church, the pastor
officiating.
Burial in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
