James E. Ellis, 82, of Carthage, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his residence. Born March 28, 1921, in Hancock County, he was the son of Edgar Raymond and Uva (VanDuyn) Ellis, both deceased. He married Catherine J. Stevens on Oct. 5, 1941; she preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1992. He married Virginia Joyce Harrold on April 23, 1993; she survives. Mr. Ellis was a lifelong resident of Carthage. He served in the 460th Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II; he was a prisoner of war from July 1944 to May 1945 and received a Purple Heart. He was a service station operator in Carthage. He was a member of East Street Christian Church in Carthage as well as Golden Rule Lodge #16 F&AM, Carthage Lions Club, and Knightstown American Legion. Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Jimmy of Orlando, Fla., and Steve Ellis of Franktown, Colo.; one daughter, Carole Ann Marsh of Knightstown; one stepson, Dr. Robert Harrold of Fargo, N.D.; two stepdaughters, Judith Muir of Carthage and Linda Burch of Plymouth; one brother, Keith Ellis of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Patricia Riggs of New Castle and Doris Linder of El Paso, Texas; seven step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel in Carthage, with the Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Carthage. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to East Street Christian Church in Carthage.
