    What The County Assessor Does?

    The County Assessor advises and instructs all township assessors of his county as to their duties, serves as reviewer of the returns made by township assessors, and according to law, has the same powers as a township assessor. He is also the inheritance tax appraiser for his county and serves as a representative of the State Inheritance Tax Division in issuing consents to transfer of property held in joint names.

    What the Clerk's Office Does?
    Some of the duties genealogists are concerned with are:
    • Filing, recording, and entering all orders pertaining to civil, juvenile, and criminal matters
    • Issuing letters testamentary, letters of administration, and letters of guardianship; recording wills, inventories of estates, sales bills, inheritance tax orders, final accounts, and reports of distribution in probate proceedings. Money to be held in trust is kept with the Clerk
    • The Clerk issues marriage licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, and licenses or certificates to practice medicine, surgery, dentistry, optometry, and other professions when applicants present to him certificates from the appropriate state examining boards. He also collects license fees from poultry dealers and junk dealers operating within the county.

    Records Deeds, Mortgages, Assignments, Releases, Powers of Attorney, Real Estate Contracts, Annexations, Trustee Elections, Affidavits, Final Decrees, Surveys, Federal Tax Liens, Mechanics Liens, Military Discharges, Articles of Incorporation, Cemetery Deeds, Bonds, Plats, Condominiums, Firms Doing Business Under Assumed Names, Delinquent Sewer Liens, and Miscellaneous Instruments. Files Uniform Commercial Code instruments. Supplies copies of any instrument and certifies to those recorded upon request. (Fee charged).

  • Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter reports (Nov 24, 2008) -- The Palatine to America Library has been closed. The library collection contains over 5000 books, journals, and other print material. The collection is being relocated to the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Columbus, Ohio. It is anticipated the Palatine Collection will be available for use sometime in the first quarter of 2009.
