Obituary
----------
Caroline M. Beck, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Beck, was born in
Dayton, Ohio, May 1, 1834, departed this life at the old home near Ridgeville,
Indiana, April 4, 1910, aged 75 years, 11 months and 3 days, having lived at
the present home for 44 years.
She at the age of 10 years with her parents moved from Dayton to Hagerstown, Indiana, and later to Windsor and was there married to John E. Smithson, March 14, 1850, and lived in the vicinity of Windsor for 16 years. To this union were born ten children, one girl and nine boys, one boy George Michael, having preceded her to the spirit world at the age of 38 years.
She was converted at the Union Christian church near Windsor early in her married life and was baptized and joined the church there. She was an unusually strong woman and helped her husband faithfully with all the cares of the home and farm and bore patiently her part of the hard work of the early settlers' life.
She was posessed of a very sunny disposition
and she always had a kind word and a cheery smile for all who she came in touch
with. She seemed to carry sunshine to
the sick and cheer sunshine to the sick and cheer to the downcast and
maintained her disposition till the last, never complaining, but patience
seemed to embody her and when asked about her future she replied that all is
well and I am ready to go. She had been a constant sufferer for almost 10 years. On the fouorth of September, 1900, she took with paralysis and has been almost helpless ever
since but her sweet dispositon and trust in God made her life more easy than it
otherwise would have been.
She leaves to mourn today a loving husband, eight sons and one daughter, the daughter and one son not present, Eliza Mendenhall of Long Beach, California, and Sater of Long Beach,
California, three brothers and two sisters, thirty-one grandchildren and
sixteen great-grandchildren beside a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
So passes the life of one we loved, one we shall cherish in memory, one who did us good and not evil.
But the work is done, the hands have ceased to toil but the word says: "Yea, they rest from their labors but their works do follow them."
