LYKENS.
----------
Death makes no distinction in its summons to the undiscovered country, young and old both fall before its decree. So was it in the case of Mary Lykens of Washington township, who died at the old homestead on the 18th inst., at the advanced age of 81 years the seventh day of this month.
She came with her husband from Fayette county, Virginia, her native State, to this county for permanent settlement in 1850, settling on what is known to everybody as the old Lykens farm, which has been kept in the family since its first entry as government land by Andrew Lykens.
She was a woman of remarkable bodily vigor as well as of mental activity. Her trip to Indiana from Virginia with her brother, all the way on horseback, both going and coming, known to so many older citizens of this county, shows what was her courage and endurance in her earlier womanhood. She maintained this vigor with but little improvement up to her last sickness, supposed to have been neuralgia of the heart, which brought the fatal stroke, her husband preceeding her by the short space of seven years.
Mother Lykens had some children, all of whom are dead but three, Phillip, Adrew and Peter. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. N. T. Butts, at Mt. Zion
church, after which she was laid away to rest in the cemetery of that church.
Considering the weather, the attendance was large.
