OBITUARY
----------
John Harris, son of Sarah Jane and John Harris, was born in Charlottesville, Hancock county, Indiana, Dec. 30th, 1844, and passed away at the National Military Home, Danville, Illinois, at 1:00 o'clock Saturday morning, May 28th, 1921, aged 76 years, 4 months and 28 days.
When the call came for volunteers for the Civil war he enlisted in Co. G, 35th Indiana Infantry, August 15th, 1862, from which he was discharged on account of disability in November, 1862, serving two months. He re-enlisted as a recruit of Co. H, 124th Regiment Volunteer Indiana Infantry which was mustered out at Greensboro, North Carolina, August 31st, 1865, serving nine months. In this service he fougnt in two battles, Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 15-16, 1864, and the same winter, in the battle of Wise's Forks near Kingston, North Carolina.
In 1873 he married Sarah J. O'Brien, who died March 4, 1885. To this union were born one daugher, Blanche Harris Watts, now residing at Hammond, Indiana, and Charles and William, deceased.
On November 1st, 1898 he married Wilhelmin Downs, who died February 23rd, 1919. From this union there were two daughters, Thelma, residing with Edward Harris at Hammond, and Nora, residing with Blanche Harris Watts at Winchester.
He leaves to mourn his death four sisters, one brother, four children and two grandchildren.
Though he never united with any church he showed a reverence of divinity in his scrupulous honesty, his faithfulness to his relatives and family and a whole lifetime of unselfishness and self-sacrifice. In his honesty and untold unselfish service he possessed attributes of true nobility. This is the record of a noble life unknown and undeveloped only through the lack of opportunity.
But- "He has achieved success who has lived well- who has looked for the best in others and has given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; and whose memory is a benediction."

Modoc Banker Passes Away
----------
Emmet Harris, Cashier of
Citizen's Banking Company Dies
----------
After suffering from Bright's disease for many years, Emmet Harris, cashier of the Citizens' Banking company of Modoc, and known by many of the business men of Winchester, died at his home in Modoc at 8 o'clock Tuesday night. He was thirty-nine years old, and leaves a widow, one son, his mother, Mrs. Mary V. Harris, of Modoc, one brother, Chester Harris, of New York, and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Davis, of New Jersey, and Mrs. Mabel Manning, of Ypsilanti, Mich.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning, probably at the church near the Harris home, and burial will be made near Modoc.
Sixteen years ago, when he was only twenty-three years old, Mr. Harris was compelled to give up his position as bookkeeper for the strawboard factory in Yorktown on account of Bright's diesease. He returned to the home place near Modoc, and was with his parents on the farm for some time. He later became apparently improved in health, and was inuced to enter the bank at Modoc, where he had been ever since. The disease, however, never left him, and at length resulted in his death.
