At the age of 15 years he enlisted in the service of his country in the 36th Indiana regiment and served until he was honorably discharged, and a short time thereafter he re-enlisted in the 19th infantry as a recruit.
He was united in marriage to Hannah Ford in the year 1867. To this union were born seven children -- four sons and three daughters. One son, one daughter and his wife preceded him to the better land. He was again united in marriage to Sarah Cox, June 7, 1888. To this union were born four children -- one surviving him, and three dying in infancy. He leaves a wife, six children, nine grandchildren, four step-children, one sister and one half brother, besides a host of friends to mourn their loss.
He united with the Christian church at White River about the year 1864. His last words were full of comfort, as he said he was ready and willing to go, although he regretted to leave family and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Maxville church, conducted by Rev. N. H. Thornburg, after which the remains were laid to rest
