Earl Clevenger Killed by Fall
----------
Fell from Top of Freight Car while Repairing the Wire at Elevator
----------
Earl Clevenger received fatal injuries in a fall from a box car at the Goodrich Bros. elevator Tuesday morning, which caused his death early Wednesday morning without ever regaining consciousness.
Clevenger, who has been employed the past few years by the Citizens' water and Light Company, was at work on some wiring on the outside of the elevator. He was on top of a box car when last seen. How he came to fall is a mystery as no one witnessed the accident. He was found in an unconscious condition by Dan McCollum, an employee at the elevator. He was taken to the Haines boarding house where he had been staying. Dr. Hunt was called to dress his wounds and found that he had suffered a fracture at the base of the brain and a deep cut on the back of the head. He also had internal hemorrhages, and there was no hope from the first of his recovery.
The deceased was twenty-three years of age and a son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Clevenger of Farmland. The remains were taken to Farmland to the home of his
parents, from where the funeral will be held Friday.
Earl Clevenger was well and favorably known in this city and his death is
regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
Note: This obituary came from the Winchester Daily newspaper, there was a written date of W.D. Feb. 21, 1918. Maxville cemetery records have Earl's death date as March 2, 1918 and interred on March 5, 1918. But these dates do not go along with the obituary. March 2, 1918 is on a Saturday not Tuesday.
