Tom Baily Retiring After
42 Years As Carrier –
And All On Winchester Route 2
----------
A Winchester postoffice record which may stand for years will be set January 31 when  Thomas A. (Tom) Baily  retires as a rural mail carrier.
Tom, who lives with his wife,  Bertha, at 400 West Washington street, Winchester, will end 42 years of service with the postal department – 42 years, all on Winchester route 2.
He doesn't want to retire, but he becomes 70 years old January 22 and the postoffice department says he must. Of course, there will be a pension for all those years of loyalty.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Baily expect to leave soon after the former's retirement to visit a son, Kenneth, at Phoenix, Ariz.
Appointed a substitute carrier in May of 1906, Tom carried mail on every route out of Winchester – and there were eleven of them back then.
He took the examination and received appointment as regular carrier on July 16, 1907 and from then to now his route has been R. F. D. 2.
About to retire, Toms says: “I am not unmindful of the fine cooperation on the part of the patrons and those many kindnesses will not be forgotten. There are no finer people than those who live on Route 2 out of Winchester.”
When the veteran postal employe took over Route 2 it covered 26 7/8 miles, had 93 boxes and 104 families.
The salary had just been raised to $900 a year. Roads all were gravel and mud.
Length of Route 2 now is 60 miles, of which 22 are paved, the remainder being allweather roads of stone and gravel. Territory in north and west and 12 miles south of Winchester.
In 1918 the eleven Winchester routes were consolidated into eight and in 1933 into four. That's what it is today.
Route 2 now has 226 boxes and about 1,100 patrons.
Occasionally Tom has trouble now, but nothing compared to the “pioneer” days away back when!
In his early years of service he used a buggy, mail wagon, a few time a Shetland pony, a bicycle and walked many, many miles to get the mail through.
Vividly does he recall his “worst winter,” 1917-1918.
More vividly does he recall his worst day!
Of course, it was on his birthdate, January 22, 1936.
“The mercury stood at 22 below,” he said. “The wind blew the snow so that visibility was shut off much of the time. Some of the carriers did not get back to the office until noon the next day.”
Six persons employed at the Winchester postoffice when he began his long service now are living.
Only two families living on the route when he took it over still live on No. 2. He has carried mail to grandchildren and great-grandchildren of some of the families he first served.
Tom holds the record for length of service as a postal employe in Winchester and his is among the longest for continual service in Indiana.
He recalls numerous kindnesses on the part of those good patrons who many times through the years when snowdrifts closed the roads and the mail man stalled, “Got a team or a tractor out, opened the road ahead or hitched on and pulled me through.”
Mr. Baily began his postoffice work in the room now occupied by the Carpenter Auto Supply company on North Main street. Then he moved to the Kelley building (now Bi-Lo) and to the new federal building in 1933.
He has served under Postmasters C. L. Hutchens, S. S. Watson, Shields Edger, B. E. Hinshaw, H. E. McNees, Troy Simmons, Charles Walland James Wall and under Acting Postmasters Mrs. Charles Davis, Mrs. Anna Heaston and Perrie A. Bragg.
Tom was born in Jay county on January 22, 1899, moving to Winchester with his parents in 1885.
“Lets not make an obituary out of this,” he said when being interviewed and having his picture taken at his home by County Recorder Bob Cox. “I'm not dead yet.”
But it is interesting to know that Mr. Baily has a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Huntington, at Bloomington, in addition to his son Kenneth in Arizona, and that he has two brothers, Ed of Winchester, trustee of White River township, and Wilbur of Lakeland, Fla., and a sister, Mrs. Mary Sawyer of Indianapolis.
Mrs. Baily was the former Bertha Daly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Daly of Winchester. The couple has been married fifty years.
Prior to becoming a mail carrier, Tom worked in the grocery store operated by his father, M. F. Baily.
