1885-1899 RANDOLPH COUNTY OBITUERY TRANSCRIPTS
Hutchins, Mrs., w/o Andrew J., died 8-25-1883, buried New Dayton Cemetery.
Note from Mary: This is Jane (Shaneyfelt) Hutchins.
Tombstone reads:
MARGARET SHANEYFELT
Died Dec 20, 1885**
Aged 74 years, 11 months, 17 days***
**SIC--this death date is in error. Margaret's DEATH CERTIFICATE states that she died Dec 22, 1885. Perhaps the stone was erected after her death?? The cemetery book gives her death date as Dec 20, 1882--a transcription eror.
***age 73-11-17 is given in the cemetery book for her age, but her tombstone says 74 yrs, 11 mo, 17 da. She was born in 1811 so the date on the stone is more accurate.
There's plenty of room around Margaret's stone for other family members, apparently their tombstones, if they had them, did not survive. It is possible that her husband and several other children are buried there, but they are not in the cemetery book.
I found an old obituary for Margaret's daughter JANE SHANEYFELT HUTCHENS, wife of Andrew J. Hutchens. Her obit states that Jane died Aug 25, 1883, and is buried in New Dayton Cemetery. I believe that she is buried with her mother Margaret, but she is not mentioned in the cemetery book, so apparently she either had no stone, or it did not survive.
Margaret McCarthy/McCarty Shaneyfelt, wife of Michael Henry Shaneyfelt, was my ggg grandmother. I descend from her through her son William Henry Shaneyfelt who moved on to Ohio, and is buried there.
This is all that I received from the New Dayton / Bear Creek Cemetery.
