Death claimed two long-time
residents of Nodaway County both veterans of the Civil War yesterday. James L. Woodard, resident of Nodaway County
since the Civil war died at 3:50 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 1119
North Mulberry Street after an illness of a year and a half. The funeral will
be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Price Funeral Home, conducted by
the Rev. HD Thompson pastor of the ME Church South and the Rev. Lane Douglas.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Woodward was born in Putnam County,
Indiana March 20, 1847. When 11 years old, he came to Nodaway County with his
parents from Centerville, Ia. This county had been his home for 76 years. He
was married to Arbell Sells of Shellsburg, Ia in Maryville on March 13, 1883.
Mrs. Woodard and two children, Hosea B. Woodard of Denver, Colo and Mrs. Eula
P. Miles, Council Bluffs, Iowa survive. Mr. Woodard and Mrs. Miles are both
here for the funeral. A son, Shubeal Woodward died Feb 8, 1922 and an infant
son died in 1892. During the last 15 years, Mr. Woodard had been engaged in the
real estate business in Maryville. About four years ago he and his wife moved
to Maryville buying the present home on North Mulberry. Mr. Woodard enlisted as a volunteer to serve
his country at the age of 18 years. He was enrolled on March 11, 1865 and was a
corporal under Capt. LH Case, Company C, 51st Regiment of Missouri
Infantry. He received his honorable discharge at Benton Barracks, Missouri Aug
31, 1865. Mr. Woodard had been a member
of the Methodist Church many years. - kbz - note I did not transcrab Robert McMichael the other CW soldier who died there as no connection to Putnam County Indiana.
