On Thursday afternoon of last week William
Wood, the only son of Mrs. Sarah Wood of Madison Township met with a fatal
accident; an accident too that was very peculiar. He jumped off a fence and the
outside of his left foot struck the stubble of a small green briar, the top of
which had been mown off only a short
time before. The stubble penetrated his boot just in front of the heel and
pierced his foot most painfully to the depth of an inch and a half. It was
given surgical attention and on Friday Mr. Wood attended the Democratic primary
and deposited his first vote. Returning
home his foot became painful and blood poisoning an dother complications set
up, resulting in his death on Sunday afternoon. The funeral took place on
Monday, Elder Wright conducting the services; burial at Bethel on Little Walnut
Cemetery. The deceased was in his 21st year, and was an estimable
young man with a host of friends. The bereaved mother and other relatives have
the earnest sympathy of all in their great bereavement – kbz

Died on Sunday Feb 4, 1894 at 4 o’clock p.m. John
William Wood, only son of Sarah Wood of Madison Township. His age was 20 years 9 months 14 days. He
leaves behind a mother one sister and a host of friends to mourn his untimely
death. Deceased was a young man well liked by everyone, as was attested by the
immense crowd at the funeral. He was an industrious, careful young man, the
life of the society in which he moved and above all, a loving, obedient and
dutiful son, the care of his widowed mother being his chief concern. She is
indeed bereft, having buried the other son not two years since. She has the
sympathy of the entire community in her bereavement. In speaking of him his
mother said, “He was always so good to me; so good to mind me,” Could a mother
give her son greater praise? It seems more than she can bear to have to give
him up. – kbz
